Baggage Handling System Controls Replacement

Project Highlights:

  • Replacement of DeviceNet and Upper Level & Lower Level Controls for 7 existing mini-inline systems
  • Provided the technical contract documents

Project Description:

Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) is modernizing and replacing their existing baggage handling system (BHS) Lower-Level Controls (LLC) and Upper-Level Controls (ULC) in seven (7) mini-inline checked baggage inspection systems (CBIS). The existing LLC architecture utilizes DeviceNet communications, an obsolete technology, and many of the components are no longer manufactured. Therefore, replacement parts are becoming scarce and cost prohibitive. The existing ULC relies on servers that were deemed end-of-life several years ago. Consequently, a like-for-like replacement is not available. In addition to the existing LLC and ULC, an existing fixed-in-place tip chute in the arrivals level ceiling space requires replacement with a conveyor in order to eliminate a constant jam condition.

Studdiford Technical Solutions, LLC (STS) has included the current EtherNet/IP based architecture for LLC and current OEM servers/workstations for ULC in this replacement design. In addition to  providing the design, STS is providing the Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) cost estimate, BHS contract drawings, BHS specifications, and assisting in the bid process. Additionally, STS is providing  construction administration, TSA coordination, and acceptance test support.
